Benny Mardones exploded onto the music scene in 1980 and was quickly nicknamed “The Voice,” a title earned because of his incredible range, as well as his soulful and passionate performance of “Into The Night.” The song became a radio classic across the country, topped the charts twice, and became one of the most frequently played tunes in radio history. It is estimated that the song has been played more than 4,500,000 times in the US alone. IN 1980, after several independent releases, Benny recorded his major label debut for Polydor with producer and friend Barry Mraz (Styx, Ohio Players), Benny recorded the album “Never Run, Never Hide.” The record included “Into The Night,” which became a number one record on the CHR and AC charts. After numerous personnel changes at Polydor, Benny released his next album, “Too Much To Lose.” which faltered and his career stalled. Dropped from his label and seemingly at his wits end, Benny’s career took off in a place he had never been, Syracuse, NY. Fans their worshiped Mardones. At his peak Mardones regularly headlined shows to over 10,000 fans in Upstate New York including a show with over 24,000 at Weedsport Speedway. Syracuse sustained his career, and Benny continued to write and release records. In 1989, KZZP, a major radio station in Arizona, was running a segment entitled “Where Are They Now?” The most popular question was, ‘Whatever happened to the guy who sang “Into The Night?”‘ Scott Shannon, then program director for Pirate Radio in Los Angeles, added “Into The Night” to its playlist. Radio stations across the country followed suit and “Into The Night” once again established itself as the most requested record on radio. Benny Mardones “Into The Night” is the only song to appear in the top-20 twice in the same decade by the same artist. Due to the success of “Into The Night,” Curb Records signed Benny Mardones and he quickly recorded “Into The Night ’89.” The track appeared on his self-titled release (known as the “Blue Album” by his fans.) Not long after that, Benny was asked to appear on a Showtime tribute to Roy Orbison, alongside such luminaries as Bob Dylan, John Fogerty, Johnny Cash, and K.D. Lang. Elvis Presley’s band was the house band for the evening. Benny has continued to release records to a nation wide adoring fan base. In 2002, he appeared back on the Billboard charts when two songs from his “Journey Through Time” album, “I Want It All,” and “I Need A Miracle” hit the AC Top 20. Benny is now the subject of an award documentary movie entitled “Into The Night: The Benny Mardones Story” that will finally be released in 2014 on DVD with lots of bonus and live footage. The trailer for the video has been watched over 270,000 on youtube.com proving Benny’s worldwide appeal. The movie includes interviews with Eddie Money, Tommy Mottola, Doc McGhee, Wayne Newton, Dick Clark, Roy Orbison, Richie Havens, Bill McGathy and many more. IN 2014 Benny will release a new album named “Timeless” featuring songs written “Into The Night” co-writer Robert Tepper and songs written with DL Byron (Grammy Award winner for Record of the year for Pat Benetar’s “Shadows Of The Night”).
